In 1971, six of these sheikhdoms, namely Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, and Fujairah, came together to form the United Arab Emirates. Shortly after, Ras Al Khaimah joined the federation, completing the formation of the UAE as we know it today.
